Mount Mitchell State Park

Book Western North Carolina Cabin Rentals close in to Mount Mitchell State Park, a great spot to enjoy hiking and panoramic views. The state park includes the peak of Mount Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi River. If you want to catch a glimpse at amazing 360-degree views, you will want to check out the summit of Mount Mitchell and various hiking trails that lead from Mt Mitchell State Park. The mountain’s summit includes an Observation Deck at the top, and the hiking route is ADA wheelchair accessible (the entire way, although it is uphill).

If you plan to hike within Mount Mitchell State Park be sure to bring along an extra layer of clothes. Normally temps are a bit cooler at the park than our Cabins in Western NC.

Other noteworthy peaks that the park encompasses are Mount Hallback, Mount Craig, Big Tom and Balsam Cone. These peaks all top out at over 6,000 feet in elevation and create gorgeous panoramas that span miles and miles. Each of these peaks has a summit trail except for Mount Hallback. Crowds are the highest along the hiking trails that lead to Mt. Mitchell, especially during certain times of the season. The other summit trails to these nearby peaks are lesser known and traveled.

Mount Mitchell State Park also serves as the home destination and camp for the grueling Assault on Mount Mitchell cycling event. The Assault on Mt Mitchell is a 102-mile endurance event that begins in Spartanburg, South Carolina and leads riders to the summit of Mount Mitchell. If you are coming to the area for this event, or the Mount Mitchell Challenge ultramarathon (of which Mount Mitchell serves as a mid-point) check out our affordable North Carolina Cabin Rentals located right near Mt. Mitchell, hiking trails, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Biltmore Estate, and great dining and shopping in nearby Asheville.
